I do not own a physical shop neither do I own a business. However, I am a generation X.
I remember when businesses only focused on how they could promote sales through radio advertisements and print advertisements. It worked well in the late 90s – early 2000s until the internet came and took over. It revolutionized the advertising/marketing world and made it so much easier for entrepreneurs especially small business owners to connect directly to their customer base.
Many businesses have taken advantage of the internet to market their products and services digital in major countries in the world including Nigeria. Most small business owners who are between the age of 24-35 lean heavily on digital strategies to promote their sales. On my WhatApp, I see business owners who advertise on a daily basis. Small business does not mean you should not take advantage of the evolution of technology around you.
They advertise their makeup products, thrift clothing, beauty products, food. An image of their product is enough to attract a potential customer; an image can be reposted by your friends and you have someone you have not met before transferring money via bank transfer to purchase your products. We’ve really come a long way!
Then you start wondering why some business owners are finding it difficult to use the internet to boost sales and promote their brand. I mean… the benefits are incredible. It could be because
- They lack knowledge of the benefits of digital marketing for their business
- The inability to own access to the internet or they cannot simply afford it
- Fear of unknown. They are afraid of things changing and they’d rather stick to traditional marketing tools.
It is 2020, they must know the reasons why their small business needs an online presence. Here are five reasons why your small business needs an online presence.
SHOWCASE YOUR PRODUCTS/SERVICES ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Putting your business online means there is a chance for potential customers to find you easily. The traditional method of marketing was through word-of-mouth or a physical shop.
It was impractical to showcase your products/services to let’s say someone outside your state. All you need is a photo image and you have made a sale.
Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter all run ads option for businesses to showcase their products/services to the right audience.
They even provide data and metrics that explain the types of people who are interested in your business by using their metrics like age, location, sex. (more on these in future posts).
Virtual advertising makes it possible for someone in their houses to view your products and contact you immediately. It is that easy! You don’t believe me?
BUILD A VIRTUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH EXISTING CUSTOMERS
Having an online presence for your small business means you are trying to build credibility. You will ensure that a customer who ordered your product last Tuesday can contact you in the nearest future to order again or even recommend you to their best friend. I mean… isn’t that the dream of any business owner?
But how would this be possible if you do not have a site link or a WhatsApp contact or a Facebook handle?
You cannot always rely only on physical relationships these days, everyone is using their mobile phones to contact their food vendor, or their wig vendor or anybody. You name it! With the internet, you can build trust and credibility with your existing customers, offer them discounted offers they cannot resist, stay connected with them.
They might contact you in the nearest future. Why? Because they trust you.
This logic applies to my freelance writing services. Clients return because they find me credible and trustworthy regardless of the fact that I have never met most of them. Check out these testimonials
