This post will guide you on how to proofread your own writing using this one important tool must not do without as a content writer.
This is a request from one of my readers and it feels so good to be receiving a request from a reader here. It makes my work as a blogger easier because I can easily create some content you are interested in. Please always remember your input is well appreciated.
I understand how cringy it can be to discover a typo in your writing right after you hit that ‘’publish’’ button. You must have sworn you read through your writing before publishing. So how did you miss it?
It is totally understandable. No one is perfect, even the best writers need editors to go through their writing. You should not feel discouraged to write. Instead, you play smart.
Since most of us freelance writers are a one-man team, we do not have the luxury of an editor. You have to find a way to proofread your own writing by yourself. So generally, I use these basic tips. I will get to the one tool I use in a minute.
Write before you edit
While writing, slow down with the editing. Consider your first draft a brain dump; editing as your writing will slow down your process.
Read out loud after editing
Even after you are down editing your first draft and you feel like you are satisfied with the finished draft. I will advise you to read it out loud. This helps me a lot, like A LOT. Your eyes miss some errors here and there, but once you read it out loud you get to cross out those vicious typos that are hiding right under your nose. There are external apps that can help you read out your writing. Try Motoread. It is available on Chrome, iOS, and Safari extensions.
Write in simple words and use less passive words
One thing that will ease your proofreading process is writing is simple words and short sentences. It will be easier to edit writing that flows so well because it uses relatable words. Remember, big grammar does not guarantee a show of intelligence. Personally, a book written in simple words paint me a vivid image quickly and drives my need to keep reading. Whatever, I do I make sure I do not complicate my writing with incomprehensible grammars.
LET GRAMMARLY PROOFREAD YOUR WRITING FOR YOU
This is the one tool that has been helping me proofreading my own writing without stress. I write daily, so I make sure I cut the workload by half by using apps that optimize my efficiency. Grammarly is one of those apps.
Grammarly is a simple app that is quite common amongst writers because it makes proofreading easier. What are the benefits?
- Detects plagiarism
- Scans grammatical errors
- Detects repeated words
- Corrects errors by default or suggests you correct them yourself
- Improves your writing readability
Grammarly is also very easy to use. Sync it will all your web applications including your Google docs and emails and even Microsoft words. It possesses additional features for those who are willing to buy the pro version but for a beginner blogger, the free version will suffice.
I cannot rave about this app enough. Sometimes when I am writing, it suggests for me words that are most appropriate for a context. It also detects the tone of your writing so you will understand how your writing might be perceived by a reader. Amazing, right?
Of course, there are other apps you can use but Grammarly works for me because it is right there on my Google Chrome website.
So how do I set it up?
For web writing: sign up using email or a google account. After confirming, sync it to your browser.
If you would like to go further, sync it to your Microsoft word software by downloading the desktop version. Make sure your Microsoft word version is updated. You are good to go!
For mobile writing: sign up/login after downloading on the App store. The downside is it is only available on iOS only. However, you do not necessarily need it on your phone when it is right in your browser.
